Tradition

Building of the spacious, in those days modern hotel Liva was started in the beginning of 1960 in the centre of city Liepaja - in the place where the municipality building stood before the war. The hotel opened its doors for the first visitors in 15 January 1966. At that time the hotel was very popular among the high-ranking Communist Party officials, however, the inhabitants of Liepāja were barred from the stay there. After regaining independence in 1991 the management of the hotel was replaced and during the next 9 years it functioned as the municipality enterprise. The hotel was privatized by Joint Stock Company Livas viesnīca in 1999. Its reconstruction started in 2000 without any interruption in the operation. It resulted in the current appearance of Līva. Boasting 111 rooms Līva still is the biggest hotel in Liepājā and one of the biggest in the whole region of Kurzeme. During its more than 40 years long existence Līva has become one of the identification symbols of the city. It has been able to maintain its excellent hospitality traditions and stable values through the decades. So, today in the centre of the historical village Liva there lies a hotel, the name of which is as a small monument dedicated to the ancient fishing village that was located here 8 centuries ago.  Also the name of the restaurant Upe [The River] was chosen, thus creating certain interrelation with the old village Liva on the bank of the River Liva.
